The Nuremberg Meistersinger are world-famous—both as an ancient guild and through Wagner’s opera. They have been staged by many renowned directors and conductors, including the current artistic director of our Nuremberg State Theatre, Jens-Daniel Herzog, for the Salzburg Easter Festival. The opera’s opening scene made not only the historical Meistersinger—above all Hans Sachs—but also the little Martha Church next to our hotel in Königstraße world-famous.
What nobody knew until now: Because the men in the church may have taken their celebrations a bit too far, they were expelled from the holy place by the 17th century. In search of a new venue for their competitions, they ended up right next door—in our very own lobby! Or rather, in the tavern that stood there at the time, called “Zum Rindsfuß” (“At the Ox’s Foot”).
The “successors” of Hans Sachs thus sang and drank here with us! And it is not at all unlikely that Hans Sachs himself may also have raised a few glasses in that very tavern—where our hotel bar and lobby now stand—after the competition next door!
